Amal Syam Calls for Urgent Action to End Famine and Genocide in Gaza Amid Global Mobilization

Gaza – July 2025

Amal Syam, Director General of the Women’s Affairs Center (WAC) in Gaza, called on international and UN organizations to take immediate action to stop the war of extermination against the Gaza Strip and end the systematic starvation policy imposed on its population since the resumption of hostilities in March.

In an interview, Syam stated that Gaza is under a suffocating blockade with all border crossings closed, including Rafah and Kerem Shalom, leading to a severe collapse in basic services, especially humanitarian aid, medical supplies, and fuel, in clear violation of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions.

Systematic Starvation and Humanitarian Collapse

Amal Syam said that the population is facing combined policies of displacement, starvation, dehydration, and destruction, resulting in widespread civilian casualties, particularly among women and children.

She noted that more than 100 people are killed daily, while famine conditions continue to worsen due to severe restrictions on food entry, with limited aid failing to meet basic needs.

She added that the closure of bakeries due to shortages of flour, fuel, and cooking gas has forced women to rely on overcrowded food distribution points and water queues under extremely difficult conditions.

Syam reported that dozens of children and hundreds of patients have died due to hunger and lack of medical care, while 95% of Gaza’s population faces catastrophic levels of food insecurity.

Children and Women at Extreme Risk

She referred to UNICEF reports indicating that more than 335,000 children are at risk of starvation, alongside widespread malnutrition and disease among children and women.

She added that all children under five suffer from anemia, while thousands of pregnant and breastfeeding women face severe nutritional deficiencies, and thousands of infants are at risk due to shortages of baby formula.

Mass Displacement and Ongoing Attacks on Civilians

Syam confirmed that over 90% of Gaza’s population has been forcibly displaced, many multiple times, and are now living in tents, damaged schools, or overcrowded shelters.

She also said that airstrikes continue to target residential areas, displacement sites, and humanitarian aid queues, with the death toll exceeding tens of thousands, alongside thousands of missing and injured civilians, most of them women and children.

Urgent International Action Required

Amal Syam called for an immediate halt to the war and starvation policy, and for the unconditional opening of border crossings to allow the entry of food, medicine, fuel, and water.

She also urged the protection of humanitarian organizations and aid workers, and called on the UN Security Council to assume its responsibilities and launch an international investigation into violations committed in Gaza.
