Amal Syam, Director General of the Women’s Affairs Center (WAC), led a specialized training series on Gender Integration in Emergency Response. The program strengthened the skills of humanitarian and mental health professionals. It also promoted gender-responsive practices during emergencies.
The training was organized by the Training and Scientific Research Department of the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme (GCMHP). It ran from May 11 to May 19, 2020. The series included six ineractive sessions, with each session lasting two hours.
Building Gender-Responsive Emergency Skills
The training brought together staff from GCMHP’s community mental health centers. Participants also represented the Administrative and Financial Affairs Department, the External Relations and Resource Development Department, and the Training and Scientific Research Department.
During the opening sessions at the Gaza Community Center and Deir al-Balah Community Center, Amal Syam explained the principles of gender integration. She highlighted why gender equality is essential during humanitarian emergencies. In addition, she shared practical methods for applying gender-sensitive approaches in daily professional work.
Addressing the Gender Impact of COVID-19
A major part of the training focused on the social impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Amal Syam discussed several challenges that affected women and families.
For example, she examined childcare responsibilities, changing family relationships, and the increased risk of domestic violence. Moreover, she addressed the difficulties organizations faced while maintaining social and psychological support services during the pandemic.
Using Digital Tools to Support Communities
The sessions also explored digital communication tools. These platforms helped organizations continue delivering essential services despite movement restrictions. Furthermore, participants discussed ways to improve access to support while promoting gender equality.
As a result, the training encouraged institutions to adopt more inclusive and effective emergency response strategies.
Interactive Learning and Practical Experience
Each session followed an interactive approach. Participants shared their professional experiences and discussed real-life challenges. At the same time, Amal Syam encouraged open dialogue and collaborative learning.
Consequently, participants gained practical skills they could immediately apply within their organizations and communities.
