Gaza – April 2016
The Women’s Affairs Center (WAC) in Gaza organized a community stand under the slogan “My Right to Work” in support of the right of women with disabilities to employment. The event brought together hundreds of women with disabilities, alongside representatives from ministries, civil society organizations, and institutions working in the field of disability rights.
The stand was part of the initiative “Supporting the Right of Women with Disabilities to Work”, under the project “Improving the Economic Situation of Women with Disabilities in the Gaza Strip”, implemented by WAC in partnership with the Civil Society Program – GIZ.
In her remarks, Amal Syam, WAC Director, stated:
“Disability is a human rights and development issue. The right to work is a fundamental human right and an integral part of human dignity. Women with disabilities are genuine partners in the economic and productive process, far from being perceived with pity or sympathy.”
Syam further called on relevant authorities, particularly the Ministry of Labor, to ensure the enforcement of labor laws and safeguard the rights of women with disabilities.
Speaking on behalf of participating women with disabilities, community activist Nisreen Al-Sidawi urged stronger coordination and networking among organizations working in the disability field to unify efforts and amplify demands. She stated:
“For how long will disability laws remain just words on paper? It is time for women with disabilities to fully enjoy their rights, especially the right to work and live a dignified, independent life.”
