“Through Their Resilience, March Blooms” – Women’s Affairs Center Celebrates International Women’s Day

Gaza – March 2017

The Women’s Affairs Center in Gaza marked International Women’s Day (March 8) with a traditional folkloric celebration attended by hundreds of representatives from local and international civil society organizations, political parties, activists, journalists, and concerned citizens.

In a welcoming speech, Taysir Mohsen, a member of the Center’s Board, emphasized that Palestinian women continue to face violence and marginalization, which intensifies under the ongoing Israeli occupation and Palestinian political division, while highlighting their persistent struggle for the Palestinian cause.

Amal Syam, Director of WAC, stated: “The world celebrates March 8 in recognition of women’s sacrifices and struggles. We, Palestinian women, celebrate the legendary resilience of Palestinian women in the face of occupation, blockade, division, poverty, unemployment, violence, and marginalization.” She added that this year’s commemoration comes amid painful memories, including years of Gaza blockade, Palestinian division, occupation, the Nakba, and the Naksa, which exacerbate women’s hardships.

Syam highlighted the continued marginalization, discrimination, poverty, unemployment, and violence faced by Palestinian women within a society governed by traditions and norms that do not support women’s rights. She noted that outdated laws fail to provide adequate protection despite Palestine’s accession to CEDAW, and called on the national authorities to end the division, achieve national unity, and hold local and legislative elections.

She also emphasized the importance of strengthening collaboration between civil, legal, and women’s organizations to empower Palestinian women, support their resilience, and advocate for their rights.

Samar Dremli, Media Coordinator and General Supervisor of the event, added: “This celebration has become a distinguished annual tradition. Every year, the Center presents the richness of Palestinian heritage and folklore with the participation of youth and artists to revive Palestinian traditions and remind generations of their authenticity, while highlighting Palestinian women’s achievements, struggles, and legitimate rights.”
